    Helpful Terms and Definitions

    Restriction

    Definition:
    If two or more independent and distinct inventions are claimed in a single application, the examiner may require the applicant to elect (designate) a single invention to which the claims will be restricted (limited to).

    Abandonment

    Definition:
    A patent application becomes abandoned for failure to file a complete and proper reply as the condition of the application may require within the time period provided under 37 CFR § 1.134 and § 1.136 unless an Office action indicates otherwise.

    Patent Cooperation Treaty

    Definition:
    The Patent Cooperation Treaty enables an inventor to file a single international application in addition to the main patent application filed in a treaty-member country; this simplifies the process of an applicant's seeking a patent on the same invention in more than one nation.

    Automated Clearing House

    Definition:
    A nationwide batch-oriented electronic funds transfer system governed by the NACHA (National Automated Clearing House Association).
